Liberals Gain. Conservatives and NDP Decline.

That was the trend in Scarborough-Guildwood and across the country Monday for the 42nd General Election. Every single Scarborough riding turned red, including those previously held by Conservative incumbent Roxanne James and NDP incumbent Dan Harris, as part of the country-wide “red wave.”

In Scarborough Guildwood, John McKay won by a landslide leaving his Conservative counterpart, Chuck Konkel, well behind after only 50 out of the 181 polls had been counted and more than doubling Konkel’s vote count by the end of the night.

Here are the final tallies,

  • John McKay - Liberal (elected): 25,187 votes

  • Chuck Konkel - Conservative: 11,109 votes

  • Laura Casselman - NDP: 4,720 votes

  • Kathleen Holding - Green: 606 votes

  • Other: 327 votes

  • Total Votes: 41,949

  • Percent Turnout: 66.27%

From Laura Casselman and her campaign team,

“The results are not what we had hoped. But be reassured this fight is far from over. We had a strong campaign, Herculean volunteers and the support of so many in the community. I am so proud of the valiant effort put into this campaign.

One thing is clear - the politics of fear and division are over. And for that, let's be thankful. Now, It will be up to progressives across the country to continue to fight for the values we believe and campaigned so hard for in this election.

As I candidate, I am truly humbled by all the support and volunteers that made this campaign possible. From, getting up at the crack of dawn to campaign at a transit stop, canvassing in the scorching heat, to putting up signs to help the campaign, thank you, thank you, thank you. You amazed and inspired me each and every day.

We have outreached to many who found a home with the NDP in this riding for the first time. We made contact with so many supporters. And this will be the foundation of happy returns next time.”
