To Dig or not to Dig, that is the Question

A meeting was held last week to discuss a Community Proposal to dead-end Galloway Road at the CN Tracks.

As part of Metrolinx’ plan to electrify the Lakeshore East GO Transit line. The government agency is planning to put grade separations in at the Scarborough Golf Club Road, Galloway Road and Morningside Avenue. This plan would also possibly include dead-ending Poplar Road at the tracks. On Thursday September 15th 2016 a meeting was held at the East Scarborough Boys and Girls Club for the community to hear and discuss a proposal from resident Steve to dead-end Galloway Road at the CN Tracks. The meeting was well attended with about 70 residents joining including a representative from Councillor Paul Ainslie's office and MPP Mitzie Hunter’s office along with Manuel Pedrosa from Metrolinx.

Steve’s proposal is to dead-end Galloway Road rather than build an underpass. With the space between the tracks and Westlake Road Steve proposes building a community park that connects to the community north of the tracks through a pedestrian/bicycle bridge, it would also mean that Galloway South could be renamed to honor Rosa and Spencer Clark.

The benefits of the new plan compared to the issues of the current plan presented by Steve.

We also got the chance to hear residents concerns about the new plan. A resident living on Galloway mentioned that she and her parents have been there for 30 years and had not seen an increase in traffic and mentioned that her concern with closing Galloway is the change in traffic flow that comes with pushing everyone onto Guildwood Parkway and Morningside. Another resident from the Toynbee and Chancery area also expressed his concern regarding changing traffic patterns for kids being dropped off at Laurier with more parents driving along Dearham Wood and Toynbee to drop kids off in the Toynbee/Chancery area. Another concern that were raised were accessibility for School Busses.

What do you think about this proposal? Should we dead-end Galloway Road or should it be kept open with an underpass? Let us know what you think, participate in our poll here and email, tweet @TheGuildwoodian or Facebook us your comments.
